In 2017, I and the CEO of the first company I worked at, after getting done with a task, happened to indulge in some carefree talks. He was not as educated as he was successful and therefore did not consider formal schooling of significant importance. I disagreed with this then and even now. He asks, “What’s the point in going to school when you can gain the critical things required to lead a successful life anyway? What does it have to offer?” I acknowledged what he said with an opinion-less nod. He answers himself — “social skills, kids learn social skills when they are put with so many different types of people in school.”

I agreed to this, and still think it’s one of the most important things going to school can give a child.

But now, when kids are stuck at home attending virtual classes, socialization is thrown out of the window. This, therefore, is a con of remote schooling. But if we were to accept this helplessly because of the pandemic we are dealing with — we would open ourselves to an array of benefits remote schooling has to offer.

In this blog, we will talk about the benefits of remote schooling on kids and, more importantly, how school management software can enable and enhance remote schooling for kids as well as teachers, administrators, and school owners during this pandemic and in years to come.

The Main Benefits of Remote Schooling

The chief data-backed benefits of remote schooling on children are as follows.

1. Kids are not over-exhausted

According to a Pew Research Center study, teens say that academic pressure is the top pressure they with 61 percent of teens declaring they feel the heat to achieve at a certain level academically.

This pandemic time has increased the mental issues multifold. Keeping this in mind, many school systems have encouraged teachers to be more lenient with coursework, assignments, tests, and grading.

Remote studying drastically makes the studying experience for kids productive and easy as remote studying is always less strenuous than physically going to school. For instance, kids do not have to dress up and catch a bus while studying from home.

2. More flexibility in schedule

In the U.S., a typical high school student starts school at 8:00 a.m. All students then have back-to-back classes with little breaks in between. But during the coronavirus pandemic, school schedules have suddenly become more agile, allowing kids with more choice over when to do their homework, school projects, assignments, and other tasks.

This gives them the power to also find the time to experience the least amount of distraction and, therefore, be most productive.

Research published in JSTOR.org has found tight schedules are significantly challenging for a child to function well. Students who over-commit themselves, especially feel obligated to take certain courses or participate in activities, will most likely experience unhealthy anxiety levels.

3. Mitigating unnecessary pressure

Mary Helen Immordino-Yang and her colleagues at USC and MIT, in a groundbreaking 2012 study, used an fMRI scanner to examine neural activity when the brain is taking a break. That is when it is wandering, staring in the blank space, or just getting bored. Known as the default mode, the brain is still highly active in this state, and with a different set of brain portions lighting up than when we are focused on the outside world, busy doing something.

This means having the time to chill is underrated, and always doing something is treated more highly than it should be. Especially when it comes to children, the more free time they have, the more imaginative and creative they can be — which is where their true power lies.

Remote schooling has created the right study and relaxing balance for the kids. It gives them enough time to study, do their homework, and just be with themselves.

4. Being in a calm and safe space

It is generally spoken by both students and teachers how much they miss the in-person connections and relationships at school and the experience of studying in a classroom. But, for some students, school socialization is marred with anxiety due to bullying and self-doubts.

According to the 2017 report by the National Center for Education Statistics, at least 20 percent of children ages 12-18 reported being bullied at school. Not surprisingly, students who are the most bullied have also been found to have lower academic performance than their non-bullied classmates.

Coronavirus has shot up anxiety levels globally. In such times remote schooling can allow kids to be in the calmness and peace of their homes with their families.

5.Getting enough bedtime

While the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests 8-10 hours of sleep for teenagers (12-18 years of age) and 12 hours for children aged between 6-12 years of age, a 2018 study of high school students across 30 states found that more than 70 percent of students surveyed were not getting enough amount of sleep during the school year.

When the Seattle school district chose to delay the start times by one hour at one school in 2016-2017, it was found that students’ sleep quota increased and grades improved.

As mentioned earlier, remote schooling has made the kids more productive and in charge of their time. This has also given them enough time to have the right amount of sleep their body requires.

I hope reading these benefits will have motivated you to accept remote schooling, not just helplessly but also proactively. Once this is done, focus on enhancing the remote teaching and studying experience. This can only be done through school management software.

Remote Schooling with School Management Software in COVID & beyond

1. Saves time of teachers and administrators

It is not common for teachers to search, find and learn about tools and technologies and take classes from their homes. It is obviously new for teachers as well as students.

The teacher’s job does not end there; they also have to make the classes interactive, take online attendance, tests, and see to it that everyone is attending the classes.

Privacy of digital data of all individuals is also an important task. All this means how difficult remote teaching is for the teaching and administrative staff of the school.

To ease this, a school management system designed for remote schooling is imperative primarily because it brings — automation.

It aids the teachers by automating repetitive, time-consuming tasks like attendance management, timetable preparation, parent-teacher communication, and more.

It aids administrators by saving their time by providing automation in modules like transportation, payslip generation, online fee collection, and more.

2. Constant contact between parents and teachers

The pandemic has done away with parent-teacher meetings like it has with many other things. Needless to say, the communication between parents and teachers (not just in the form of meetings) is important to keep track of students’ performance and have a positive role to play in their overall development.

Any best school management software would have inbuilt reminders and communication tools to send alerts and reminders to parents about various things like exam dates, test scores, announcements, holidays, assignments, and other things.

The best part is this technology is very less intrusive and hyper-convenient. Parents receive these communications or reminders as either text or push notifications on their smartphones.

3. Smooth Payroll Management

Payroll is another aspect that is affected by the pandemic. The salaries have changed. With the schools being closed for the majority of 2020, not all teachers and other staffers get paid what they otherwise would.

Now, add to this hullabaloo all salary transactions going 100% paperless and digital.

School management software comes with human resource features that take care of the lifecycle of all employees in school like Deans, principals, teachers, administrators, or other non-teaching staff like school chefs, security guards, and janitors.

The school management software is responsible for all human resource processes like employee admission, leave management, payroll assignment, to payslip generation.

For instance, payroll can be automated by only a one-time setup. Each month every school employee will receive a detailed summary of their salary along with its breakage and auto deduction.

More importantly, all the staff members can access their payroll and monthly payslips from anywhere. All they have to do is open their smartphone, go to the school ERP software app and download the documents.

4. Not losing track of valuable student data

I will not mind if you say that this point should be number 1. The prime importance of any school management software is to keep a precise track of student lifecycle data.

The student life cycle starts from the pre-admission stage to the day they leave the school. Gathering all the information in between helps teachers gain important metrics like:

  • Their average overall score across subjects.
  • How disciplined is the kid?
  • What subjects are they good at?
  • How attentive are they?
  • Which extracurricular activities do they excel in?
  • Are there any cases of truancy or other misbehavior?

All these key metrics, along with attendance, teacher remarks, school psychologist’s insights, and a bundle of other information associated with the student are stored and managed by the school management software.

As of May 2021, it will be almost you are and a half since schools across the U.S. have haphazardly been open and shut. In such an environment of irregularity and uncertainty, it seems almost impossible to keep track, gather, and store valuable student data without a school management software also designed for remote functioning. The school management software mitigates any need for the physical presence of students and teachers and manual entry of any data to track student activity and growth

5. Timetable Management

School and institutional timetables need to be handy both by teaching faculties and the students. School management software allows the teachers and students to do just the same. Everyone can access the timetable through the school management software app or from a web browser. Moreover, having a digitized version of timetables is more effective and convenient.

A School management system offers a host of multiple dynamic time tables like student time table, teacher time table, classroom time table, standard wise time table and more. All of which can be easily viewed from a single place.

Accessibility is not the only benefit of timetable management software. Here are some of the chief benefits of timetable management software:

  • Easy creation of timetable and can export in Excel format
  • You can create time-slots for the timetable as per your institute requirement.
  • You can create different time-slots for different standards as per the need.
  • Create recess slots as per the need
  • Edit and change timetable as to when needed.
  • Students can view their respective class timetables on their smartphones.
  • Teachers can view their whole week’s timetable in their mobile application.
  • From time to time, re-arrangement can be done
  • Avoid conflicts in timings for teachers.
  • Facility to select school working days
  • Automatic creation of timetables for teachers on the creation of students’ timetables

6. Gradebook Generation

One of the main benefits of school management systems during this pandemic is that it allows you to go paperless big time, which means going contactless. For instance, it allows teachers to create digital grade cards for parents and students to view remotely.

TeacherEase, a software that enables digital classrooms, has mentioned on their website that when a parent or student checks their grades online (that is to say — having incessant and easy access to their grade cards), student performance improves dramatically. Their grades increase by 5-8% and missed work decreases by 40%.

After the examination, faculties can upload marks and grades scored by a student in every subject into the grade book software, and the grade books for all students will be created automatically in a branded template of your school’s choosing.

Moreover, parents can view their child’s current assignments, scores, missing work, and more in the scorecard, something that is not possible in the physical grade cards. Also, the teachers can choose what the parents can view. All the data in the grade book always stays up to date requiring only minimal effort and inputs from the teachers.

7. Digital Payments

When the whole world is moving towards online payment across industries, why should the educational sector, herein, the schools, stay behind?

The important school processes like fee collection and receipt generation can be simplified and digitized with school management software. Moreover, integration with different payment gateways like PayPal, Stripe, Amazon Pay, 2Checkout, Apple Pay, Square, Samsung Pay, and more are also possible. This will allow parents to pay the fees due online without needing to come to schools or banks and stand in long queues.

Additionally, parents can be automatically informed by the school management system for all due dates, and fines for late payments remainders according to pre-set rules by the school management.

8. Data-driven decision making

The chief advantage of a school management software for the administrators and owners of a school is that it helps them leverage the power of data.

This is done through various analytical reports that a school management system can avail you of. These reports can help school management to make quick and data-driven decisions.

There are multiple reports available from each of the school management software modules, and these reports from multiple modules can be combined using custom reporting features for better insights. Additionally, for advanced reporting, third-party data analytics tools can be integrated with school management software.

9. Increases Admission

Admissions and enrollment management software is a subset of school management software. This helps school administrators smoothly run the entire admission process from outreaching prospect students to handling application-related fee payments.

Importantly, admissions and enrollment management software mirror the capabilities of CRM software. They offer marketing tools designed exclusively to attract and communicate with prospective students. These often contain finding target audience, marketing outreach, email marketing facilities, lead gen forms creation, application processing, payment processing, school tour scheduling (virtual tours, now), and interview scheduling.

10. School budgeting

School budgeting is one of the prime advantages of school budgeting on the administration front.

Apart from many modules available in the school management software, there is also a finance module available which is also known as school budgeting software. It helps the school owners and administrators in developing and managing the optimum budget for the school.

This is done by accessing the previous year’s expenses versus income data and then planning programs and setting up goals and priorities for the present academic year using this past data.

11. Multi School management

If you own a group of K-12 schools, a single school management software can help you control all of them from a single place.

Any best school management system has the ability to combine the different digital operations of different schools and offer a multischool super-admin layer. From this super-admin layer, all the people in charge of overlooking all the schools can generate reports and execute fine control.

Conclusion

Though remote schooling has been forced on us now, we can make the entire process seamless by using the best school management software. All school management systems are more or less equipped to offer great assistance in remote teaching.

Even post coronavirus, the Government, school owners, administrators, and teachers, along with parents, should understand the benefits of remote schooling to possibly create a combination of hybrid schooling structure for the psychological and physical betterment of the kids.
