Sankalp Computer & Systems Pvt. Ltd., a software development company, was started in 2001 by two individuals – Abhay Dugad and Rajan Dhole. With a vision to achieving heights in the IT sector, Sankalp has served 4000+ satisfied clients in over 40 countries across the globe by now. Right from Direct Selling to E-Commerce, Retail Management, and Mobile Solutions, it caters to multiple domains. Sankalp is headquartered in Pune, India.

In Conversation With Abhay Dugad, Co-founder & Director of Sankalp

What made you start a company like Sankalp?

Since the year 2001, when Sankalp was established, I have always conceived of starting an IT company as being a major challenge and one with sizable repercussions for an entrepreneur, coming with its own share of rewards and risks. However, I believed that the industry had tremendously great potential. When we started operations, I realized there was much more scope for growth than earlier imagined. My family supported and trusted me, especially my wife, who is a significant reason for my entry in the industry. With the trust of my family and their support, I was inspired to create a company that would impact IT innovation in a revolutionary way. Born out of the vision to challenge the industry and IT professionals to give their best to the corporate ecosystem, Sankalp was an endeavor that culminated into ISO-certified, multiple award-winning companies.  Steve Jobs remarked that “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.” At Sankalp, we are focused on being innovative market leaders.

What challenges and opportunities you observed in this long run?

According to me, every opportunity brings a new share of challenges with it. Each challenge opens the door to a new opportunity. For all the time, the challenge is to meet client expectations in terms of price, service, and delivery. Building a team that meets obstacles and helping the team to stay motivated all the time is the biggest challenge. While opportunities are ever-present, we need to have the right people working at the right time in the right direction. In this digital era, mobile app development is as profitable as it is innovative. We thrive on cutting-edge technologies and being the trendsetters, meeting customer requirements, and creating mobile apps as well as software solutions and digital marketing solutions that help businesses to grow.

What’s the most important thing you are working on right now? How are you making it happen?

Sankalp is presently in the process of receiving CMMI level-3 certification. The team at Sankalp is working round-the-clock for achieving this impressive milestone. This remains a mission-critical area we are presently working on. Making an effort to lead the industry to new heights has always been a goal for us. This is the reason behind our strategic partnerships with leading software brands like Microsoft, organizations like NASSCOM and CRISIL, and government bodies like MCCIA. Each of our certifications and accreditation is a testament to the skill, dedication, and commitment of the team at Sankalp.

We would like to know the most satisfying moment in your business to date.

As Sankalp’s management, we receive immense satisfaction when international clients appreciate and acknowledge our work. Working with clients across the globe, we are proud and extremely delighted with the positive response Sankalp has elicited among companies worldwide. We are also significantly honored to be of service to our clients worldwide and change their perceptions about IT workforce from India, for the better. Sankalp’s efficient and value-added services have changed the views of global clients towards our country.  Our global reach spans 40+ countries and 4000+ clients. We have crossed barriers in terms of cultures, continents, and nations to serve companies that need our services. Each success story only motivates us to serve our customers better.

What are your metrics to measure success?

While success is generally measured in terms of sales volumes, annual turnover, profit or revenue generated, or even the number of countries served, for me, Sankalp’s real success comes from the vital change we have made in young peoples’ lives. For me, helping young professionals to turn in extraordinary performance is the key motivator. It takes vision, commitment, and dedication to challenge young minds and help professionals to tap their inner talents and skillsets to serve customers better. Success comes from helping the vibrant, energetic, and dynamic young professionals at Sankalp to maximize their potential.

Where do you see Sankalp in the coming 5 years?

Goal definition until 2020 is one of the overarching objectives of Sankalp’s journey as a thriving IT enterprise. We seek to increase our export business to 80%, doubling it from 45% of the previous financial year. Within 5 years, we aim to become a 100% export unit with a sales turnover of 3 million USD annually. Our team is motivated, hardworking, and persistent in achieving business goals. Sankalp seeks to retain its competitive edge, and our people are our valuable resources, for this.

What makes your company stand out from the competitors?

Sankalp is not driven by profit or revenue-generation objectives alone. Values and unique, distinctive culture drive us. Our company is employee-centric, and our people are our strength. The success we have attained as an award-winning company comes from the incredible talent and skills of Sankalp’s human capital. Our employees never let us down, no matter how big the challenge is. Sankalp’s team of visionary and disciplined professionals gives our business its winning edge.

If you weren’t building your start-up, what would you be doing?

If I was not building my start-up, I would be working with a company in the automobile industry at C-suite management levels. But, for me, starting a business was my passion. My commitment to the company defines me as a leading business owner and management of a world-class organization.

What are the things you do to keep yourself interested, updated, and inspired?

As a tech founder and IT innovator, I keep myself updated with the latest technological trends by reviewing lots of data on the web and social media as well. I talk to many youngsters on a regular basis to understand their views. My 14-year-old son is my biggest inspiration. Staying interested, updated, and inspired is all about working on your knowledge and skills. For me, the youth of today are the ultimate source of inspiration for their perseverance, consistency, and hard work.

A piece of advice you would like to give to budding entrepreneurs.

Don’t just start a business to earn money; follow your passion. Hard work and right strategies are the only choices. Be optimistic and flexible. To be successful, you have to be very sensible at the same time. Being practical, focused, determined, and consistent is the key to entrepreneurial success. To quote Bill Gates, “Patience is a key element of success.” Opportunity knocks without giving prior notice and the only patient, disciplined entrepreneurs, will succeed in reaching the zenith of success. Another essential ingredient is persistence, according to Jobs, when he reiterated “about half of what separates successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance.” Success comes from making a strong effort and believing in your vision, rather than being driven by profits alone.
